On June 12 one of our staff members Mr. Philip Wanduru made is first PhD forum seminar on “understanding determinants, short- and long-term outcomes of intrapartum related neonatal impairment in rural Uganda.” This was a virtual seminar hosted via the Zoom medium and brought together people from different walks of life including academics, development partner agencies like UNICEF, Ministry of Health representatives, CSOs, medical associates, PhD fellows and students. His presentation briefly shared the context of rural Uganda and intrapartum related neonatal impairment, the focus of his PhD, and what to expect from this study. The seminar was chaired by Prof Peter Waiswa and reviewed by Dr Francis Xavier Kasujja. The seminar recording can be found on the school’s website https://sph.mak.ac.ug/
Phillip joins colleagues Dr Gertrude Namazzi, Mr Joseph Akuze, Mr Rornald Kananura and Ms Doris Kwesiga at different levels with their studies.
About Philip
Phillip is a public health specialist with over 8 years of experience working in health care in Uganda. He has worked with the Makerere University Centre of Excellence for Maternal Newborn and Child Health for 4 years now, coordinating various projects in maternal and newborn health.
He is passionate about improving the quality of care provided to mothers and babies in health facilities.
Phillip recently enrolled in a PhD program at Makerere University and Karolinska Institute. His work focuses on understanding the short and long-term effects of hypoxic-ischemic insults on babies. He will be following up on babies who experience hypoxic insults at birth for up to 2 years to identify how this affects their neurodevelopment. The work will be conducted in Eastern Uganda.
