The Centre of Excellence for Maternal Newborn and Child Health together with East Africa Preterm Birth Initiative on November 30 held a Uganda national dissemination of findings from a randomized controlled trial of a package of evidence-based interventions targeting the intrapartum period.
Held online via zoom, the dissemination was held under the theme “Transforming the culture of care improves preterm survival.”
This cluster-randomized controlled trial was among 20 public sector health facilities in the Busoga Region of Uganda (four facilities) and Migori County, Kenya (16 facilities) to evaluate the impact of a package of intrapartum quality-of-care interventions on 28-day mortality rates among babies born small and preterm.
The trial’s primary results that showed an improvement in the odds of preterm survival by 34% were published in the Lancet Global Health in July 2020.
The Webinar brought together various stakeholders including health workers, sub-national and national policy makers, academia, and development partners.
In her closing remarks, the Health ministry’s Commissioner for Maternal and Child Health Dr Jesca Nsungwa-Sabiiti welcomed the results saying they would inform policy and practice as the country rewrites the sharpened plan on RMNCAH.
