About MNCH
Advancing Health Systems for Mothers, Newborns and Communities
A Centre Built on Evidence, Partnership & Health Systems Strengthening
A legacy of strengthening health systems across the region.
Evidence-based programs successfully implemented at scale.
Expanding evidence-based solutions across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Makerere University Centre of Excellence for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) is an African-led, globally recognized premier institution and one of the largest multisectoral institutions for RMNCAH+N in Sub-Saharan Africa. We generate evidence, drive innovation, build capacity, and translate knowledge into policy and practice for sustainable health. We assess what works and what does not work, and feed the gaps.
Our vision is to create a Uganda and Sub-Saharan Africa where high-quality evidence and innovations drive Maternal, Newborn Child and Adolescent health (MNCH) policies and programs, ensuring equitable and sustainable health services.
Established in 2013 at the Makerere University School of Public Health, with support from the Save the Children through the Saving Newborn Lives initiative, and funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Centre has grown into a global thought leader at the intersection of evidence, policy, and practice.
For over a decade, MNCH has generated high-quality evidence, mobilized resources, and translated knowledge into policy and practice informing program design and large-scale RMNCAH interventions in Uganda, across Sub-Saharan Africa, and globally.
